Exceed Technologies, Inc. (“Exceed”) was incorporated in Illinois on November 3, 2003 for the purpose of developing a compensation software solution known as Green Total Compensation (Green) for small-to-mid-sized enterprises (SMEs), notably community banks. The co-founders were Charlie Miles and Walter Martens, high school friends who both worked at State Bank of the Lakes (www.sbotl.com), a community bank in northern Illinois.
The concept driving Green’s initial development was to provide a user-friendly web-based application that enabled SMEs to launch a company-wide line-of-sight compensation program by tracking individual, team and company performance and compensating based on this performance.
Green allowed a company to develop a complex system with multiple key performance indicators (KPIs) for every job description. A performance compensation program using Excel or paper calculations is overly simplistic and tends to improperly incentivize individuals due to its simplicity. Green empowered a bank, construction company or retailer to run scenario testing by comparing plan results to past performance and future expectations.
